The Confluence Hall & Eureka! McConnel Science Museum project brought the two buildings into one, 87,500-sf space. Confluence Hall is home to CMU's mechanical, civil, and computer engineering programs. Construction included numerous labs, study spaces, and 22 classrooms. The building is also filled with cutting-edge equipment and tools, including a 15-foot wind tunnel, hydraulic ironworker, and plasma table. The design incorporated LEED criteria, including the use of sustainable materials and optimization of energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, natural lighting, operable windows, minimization of water usage, and superior standards for air quality. Eureka! McConnel Science Museum is a non-profit S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) museum with dozens of changing exhibits.
